Mount Olive Defeats Lees-McRae In Four Sets In Men's Volleyball Action

BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The Mount Olive Trojans defeated the Bobcats of Lees-McRae College in four sets on Friday evening in Conference Carolinas men's volleyball action at the Williams Gymnasium in Banner Elk, N.C.

How It Happened


  • The teams started the match pretty even as the score sat 3-3 through the opening serves, but back-to-back errors by the Trojans gave Bobcats a two-point 5-3 lead. 
  • Mount Olive came back to take the lead 8-6 following a 5-1 run that included three kills by Luke Visgitis, one from Eric Visgitis and an LMC error.
  • The Trojans forced the Bobcats to call a timeout following a service ace from Luke Visgitis that put UMO ahead 13-9 after a 5-3 run.
  • Lees-McRae came out of their timeout to pull within a point of Mount Olive, 14-13, following a pair of service aces that made UMO call a timeout.
  • The Bobcats took a two-point lead, 19-17, following a 6-3 run that made the Trojans call their second timeout to regroup.
  • LMC managed to hold off the Trojans as they closed out the set on a 6-5 run to win the opening set 25-22.


  • UMO came out taking a strong 6-2 lead to start off the second set. Three kills, a double block from Brad Monaghan and Eric Visgitis, and two Bobcat errors combined for the opening run.
  • LMC came back to take an 8-6 lead following a 6-0 run that included five consecutive Trojan errors.
  • After subbing in Nicolas Laxar and calling a timeout to strategize, the Trojans went on a 9-5 run to take a two-point lead, 15-13, following the kill by Eric Visgitis.
  • The Bobcats stayed within two points throughout the remainder of the set but the Trojans held on to close the set on a 10-9 run, winning the second set 25-22 and tying the match points at one set each. 


  • The teams sat tied at three-all early on but an LMC service error and a kill by Max Cristina gave Mount Olive a 5-3 lead.
  • Lees-McRae knotted the score at six-all following a service ace and started a back and forth spurt that saw the score tied five times and the lead change hands twice.
  • UMO tied things up at 10 all on a kill by Monaghan that began a 6-1 run that forced an LMC timeout with the Trojans leading 15-11.
  • Mount Olive continued to run going on a 6-4 run out of the timeout that was capped off by a Laxar service ace to give the Trojans a 21-15 lead heading into a second Bobcat timeout.
  • UMO scored three points coming out of the timeout on a pair of kills from Monaghan and Eric Visgitis and a Laxar service ace to go up 24-15.
  • The Bobcats put a pair of points on the board but an LMC service error gave the Trojans set point to win the third set 25-17.


  • Three consecutive Bobcat errors gave the Trojans a quick 3-0 lead to begin the fourth set.
  • Mount Olive took a four-point lead, 9-5, following a kill and service ace from Cristina and an attack error by a Bobcat.
  • Lees-McRae pulled within a point, 12-11, following a 6-3 rally, but Mount Olive held off the Bobcats with a 5-2 run taking a 17-13 lead into an LMC timeout.
  • LMC came within three points of UMO, but the Trojans held off the rallying Bobcats to win the fourth set 25-21 as a kill from Cristina gave the Trojans their final point.


  • Eric Visgitis led the UMO attack with 13 kills on 22 attacks for a .545 hitting %.
  • Brad Monaghan tallied 12 kills on 23 attacks for a .478 % and Luke Visgitis rounded out the top scoring Trojans with 11 kills on 19 attacks for a .474 %.
  • Nicolas Laxar tallied a team-high 10 digs while Joel Roberts was just behind with nine. 
  • Shane Yeo had a match-high 43 assists for the Trojans.


Mount Olive wraps up the regular season as they continue their road trip Bristol, Tenn. The Trojans face the King Tornado at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 6.
