The University of Mount Olive softball team began its Spring Break trip to the Sunshine State with a pair of wins at the 2016 Spring Games Sunday at Clermont, Fla. The Trojans opened with a 6-4 victory over Nyack and defeated Wayne State (Neb.) 4-3 in the nightcap.
Mount Olive (8-10) overcame a 4-1 deficit against Nyack with five runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Trojans capitalized on two walks and two errors in the inning. Caitlin Ewers had three runs batted in for the Trojans.
Against Wayne State, Ewers' leadoff single sparked a three-run second inning for Mount Olive. Trojan starting pitcher Madison Johnston (5-4) had her bid for a third straight shutout denied when Wayne State struck for three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Ewers led off the top of the seventh with a double and pinch-runner Kelly Huffman scored what proved to be the game winner on Kayla Allen's rbi-single. Reliever Julie Hodges overcame a leadoff double in the bottom of the seventh for her first collegiate save.
