Wilson, N.C. – The University of Mount Olive women's basketball team defeated Barton College, 78-71, on Wednesday afternoon in Wilson, N.C.

How It Happened


  • Mount Olive fell behind from the opening tip as Barton took the first five points of the contest. 
  • The Bulldogs extended their lead to 15-7 at the midway point of the opening quarter.
  • Ni'Ya Styles hit a three-pointer at the 1:21 mark and brought the Barton lead down to its lowest at that point 17-16, but UMO was unable to get a stop on defense and take the lead.


  • The second quarter remained the same story line as the first as Barton held onto the lead with the Trojans again were able to get the deficit to a single point at 37-36 with 2:43 remaining before halftime.
  • Mount Olive in the waning minutes of the second quarter fought back to tie the game at 40 with over a minute left, however, Barton took back the momentum with a layup to take the lead heading into the break.


  • The Trojans took their first lead of the game with 7:57 left in the quarter 46-44, but as was the flow of the game thus far Barton tied the game once more at 46 seconds later.
  • Back-to-back layups by Kiara Jones gave UMO its largest lead of the game 52-48 at the 4:54 mark.
  • Mount Olive mounted its first run of the game with 3:31 remaining as the Trojans put up seven unanswered points pushing their lead to 57-50. 
  • The quarter ended with a 7-2 run by Mount Olive to give the Trojans their first double-digit lead at 64-54.


  • For the first time in the game, Mount Olive controlled the entire quarter not allowing Barton to draw under five for the remainder of the game.


  • Senior Kiara Jones led the way for UMO, pouring in a career-high 27 points and collecting 11 boards.
  • Also in double figures for UMO were Styles (18) and Daria Simmons (15).
  • UMO outshot Barton, 45.2% to 40.3%.

Mount Olive returns to Kornegay Arena on Saturday for a 4 p.m. showdown with Erskine in the annual Free Will Baptist Church Night.
