Mount Olive, N.C. – The University of Mount Olive women's basketball team survived a scare from Barton College, 83-80, on senior night in Kornegay Arena in Mount Olive, N.C.

How It Happened


  • Mount Olive opened an early 11-4 lead on Barton with 6:20 left in the quarter.
  • The Bulldogs responded with a 5-0 run to push Barton back within two at 11-9 with 5:18 left on the clock in the opening period.
  • UMO bounced back to take a six-point lead after one quarter of play at 25-19.


  • A layup by freshman Hope Toliver gave the Trojans a ten-point advantage, 32-22, with 7:16 left in the second period.
  • Barton charged back to within two with an 18-10 run to end the quarter, as the Trojans hit the break with just a 42-40 lead.


  • The opening two minutes of the second half mirrored the first half, as UMO struggled to extend its lead as the Trojans held a slim 46-45 advantage with 8:01 remaining in the quarter.
  • UMO looked to have taken control with 3:54 left on the clock in the third as Mount Olive pushed its lead to nine at 56-47.
  • Barton continued to fight as the Bulldogs cut UMO's lead to four, 63-59, heading into the final ten minutes.


  • A layup by junior Ni'Ya Styles with 9:01 remaining in the fourth regained a seven-point lead for the Trojans at 67-60.
  • Slowly chipping away at UMO's advantage, Barton pushed within one at 73-72 with just over four minutes remaining to play, the closest the Bulldogs had been since tying the game in the final three minutes of the opening half.
  • Back-to-back layups by the Bulldogs gave Barton its first lead of the contest at 76-75 with 1:53 remaining on the clock.
  • Styles answered for the Trojans before Barton's Kianna Wynn regained a 78-77 lead for Barton with 51 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
  • Trading baskets again, senior Kiara Jones scored off the glass, followed by a layup by the Bulldogs' JerBria Smith that gave Barton the 80-79 lead with 27 seconds left to play.
  • With 18 seconds left, senior Daria Simmons received the ball at the top of the key, made a crossover dribble, drove, and pulled up from the free throw line and buried a jumper that gave the Trojans' an 81-80 lead on what proved to be the game-winning bucket.
  • Styles toed the line and knocked down a pair of free throws with five seconds left that helped secure the 83-80 Trojans' victory.


  • Styles led the way for the Trojans with 27 points in the win.
  • On their senior night, Simmons (21) and Jones (19) each scored in double figures with Jones adding 12 rebounds for her 13th double-double of the season.
  • Toliver tied a season-high with 10 points in the victory.
  • UMO outshot Barton, 50.8% to 44.6%, but the Bulldogs outrebounded the Trojans, 40-37.


  • The 21 wins this season are tied for the third-most in a season in program history.

Mount Olive opens the Conference Carolinas Women's Basketball Tournament as the No. 3 seed, as the Trojans will host sixth-seeded Erskine College at 7 p.m. on Monday, February 27 in an opening round matchup in Kornegay Arena in Mount Olive, N.C.
