Mount Olive Defeats Emmanuel 22-1 In Conference Women's Lacrosse Opener

Claire Wigler tied a school record with six goals and Riann Daziel added five goals as University of Mount Olive defeated Emmanuel College 22-1 in Conference Carolinas women's lacrosse Saturday at Amon Field. The Trojans connected on each of their first nine shots and had a double-digit lead before the midway point of the first half.

Mount Olive (2-0 overall, 1-0 Conference Carolinas) got on the scoreboard just over a minute into the contest on the first of Wigler's four first-half goals. Candace Corkin and Alysha Kulka scored goals 27 seconds apart and Wigler added two more goals to give the Trojans a 5-0 lead with 25:47 left in the first half.

Daziel sandwiched a pair of goals around a Katie McGovern goal and Corkin added another goal to give Mount Olive a 9-0 lead with 21:26 remaining. Mount Olive's streak of consecutive shots came to an end, but McGovern put the Trojans in double figures with her second goal of the half with 17:12 left.

Emmanuel (0-1, 0-1) had a chance to get on the scoreboard late in the first half with a pair of close range shots, but Trojan goalkeeper Sarah Snell recorded saves on both shot attempts. Daziel finished the first-half scoring in the final minute as the Trojans led 15-0 at intermission.

Wigler scored less than 90 seconds into the second half and scored the record-tying goal with 23:51 left to play. She tied the record set last year by McGovern.

Mount Olive scored seven goals on eight shots in the second half. The Trojans outshot Emmanuel 30-5 for the game. Kulka finished with three goals and two assists, while Snell recorded three saves.

Emmanuel spoiled Mount Olive's shutout bid with a goal with 9:21 remaining in the contest. Tara Larson scored on a pass from Allie Brock.

Mount Olive returns to action Wednesday as the Trojans play host to Lenoir-Rhyne in a non-conference match-up. Game time is 4 p.m. at Amon Field.
