Trojans Nearly Sweep Crusaders Of NGU


TIGERVILLE, S.C. - The University of Mount Olive women's tennis team defeated the Crusaders of North Greenville University 8-1 on Sunday afternoon in Conference Carolinas at the Vance Tennis Complex in Tigerville, S.C.

  • The Trojans came out of the doubles round ahead 2-1 after the doubles games.
  • Sonja Gärtner & Areej Fareh fell 8-1 in the No. 1 doubles position, while Jennifer Byrd & Alex Goffin won the No. 2 doubles flight, 8-1.
  • Nicole La Chappelle & Emma Burroughs won by default in flight three as NGU did not have enough players to fill a third doubles pair.
  • UMO went on to win all six singles games, taking the overall match 8-1 over the Crusaders.
  • Burroughs and Carolina Carter picked up wins by default on courts five and six, respectively, again due to a short North Greenville roster.
  • La Chappelle picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 4 singles spot to give UMO the 5-1 match lead as she finished her singles match first.
  • Gärtner concluded her marathon of a match at the No. 1 position winning 6-3, 3-6, 16-14 over NGU's No. 1 player.
  • Fareh took down the No. 3 Crusader winning 4-6, 6-0, 10-6, putting the score at 7-1 in UMO's favor.
  • Goffin wrapped up the match with a 7-5, 6-7, 10-8, in the No. 2 singles flight putting the final tally, UMO 8 - NGU 1.


Mount Olive is back in action on Tuesday, April 10, as the team returns home to Mount Olive, N.C., to face North Carolina Wesleyan. First serve is set for 2 p.m. at the John Neal Walker Tennis Center between the Trojans and Battling Bishops.
