MOUNT OLIVE, North Carolina - The University of Mount Olive women's volleyball team fell to the Bobcats of Lees-McRae College in five sets on Friday night at Kornegay Arena in Mount Olive, NC. UMO falls to 2-5 overall and 0-2 against Conference Carolinas opponents, while LMC moves to 3-8, 1-0 on the year.
The Trojans came out early taking the first set 25-18 but the momentum turned in favor of the Bobcats in sets two and three which game Lees-McRae a 2-1 match score lead. UMO fought deep to take the fourth set from LMC 25-19, but could not hold on as errors overcame the Trojans as they fell 15-8 in the final set.
Mount Olive was led by senior Ania Keene with 15 kills on the night as well as putting up eight digs. Freshman Amara Eziakonwa joined Keene in double-figures with 11 kills on 25 attacks. Eziakonwa tallied three service aces and three solo blocks as well. Madison Goodman set up 22 assists while Jimnelly Del Valle dug up 23 digs to lead the defensive line. Starr Sergent also had double-digit digs with 15 of her own to go along with nine kills and a team-high six service aces.
The Bobcats were led by Olivia Ney with 11 kills while teammates Anaya Govindji and Lex Zangari each added ten of their own. Megan Gallion led with 26 assists with Erica Slinde on her heels with 19. Caitlyn Smirne and Kaitlyn Arentz each had double-digit digs with 19 and 18 respectively. Elissa Small led the Bobcats with four service aces.
The key moment of the match came in the fifth set as the Bobcats broke a 7-7 tied to close out the set and match on an 8-1 rally winning the game in five over the Trojans.
The Trojans return to Kornegay Arena on October 1 when they host Limestone College in Conference Carolinas action. The Trojans and Saints take to the court at 7 PM for the first serve.
